What Is a Zipper Set?

A zipper set is a package assembled for a defined production, repair or sampling purpose. It may contain ready-length zippers, continuous chain, sliders or several lengths and colors from one zipper family.

Not every set has the same format. The buyer should first determine whether the project requires finished zippers or cut-to-length chain that still needs slider installation and end preparation.

Set Selection by Workshop Type

Ready-Length Zipper Packs

Ready-length sets contain finished zippers with installed sliders and prepared end construction. They may be suitable for repair services, samples and workshops using repeatable garment or accessory measurements.

Examples include short wallet zippers, children's jacket zippers, mixed invisible-zippers and full-length abaya zipper packs.

Continuous Chain and Slider Sets

Continuous-chain sets contain a stated quantity of chain and, where specified, a number of compatible sliders. The chain is cut during manufacturing.

Common quantities in the category include:

• 8 m / 26.25 ft with 8 components
• 10 m / 32.81 ft with 10 sliders
• 20 m / 65.62 ft with 10 or 20 sliders
• 50 m / 164.04 ft with 25 sliders
• 100 m / 328.08 ft with 50 sliders
• 200 m / 656.17 ft with 100 sliders

The description must state whether a listed “pull” is a complete slider body or only a pull tab.

Starter, Trial and Production Sets

• Starter set: Small pack for basic repair or first-time use.
• Trial set: Used to test a chain, coating, color or slider before larger production.
• Repair set: Mixed ready lengths for alterations and service stock.
• Production set: Larger quantity for repeat workshop manufacturing.
• High-volume set: 50–200 m / 164.04–656.17 ft continuous chain packages.

Calculating Chain and Slider Requirements

1. Measure the actual closure path for one product.
2. Add sewing, end-finishing and curve allowances.
3. Multiply by the production quantity.
4. Add sampling and cutting waste.
5. Determine whether each product uses one or two sliders.
6. Compare the required slider total with the package contents.

Separating and Two-Way Terminology

A separating or open-end zipper allows both tapes to detach at the bottom. It is not automatically a two-way zipper.

Two-way or combi should only be used when the zipper has two sliders and can open from the lower section.

Common Buying Mistakes

• Do not infer package contents only from product photographs.
• Do not describe every separating zipper as lower-opening or two-way.
• Do not confuse ready-length packs with continuous-chain sets.
• Do not assume equal color quantities in a mixed-color pack.
• Do not mix #3, #5, #10 coil or molded-chain sliders.
• Do not promise full waterproofing from a coated zipper set alone.
• Do not order high chain quantities without calculating slider consumption.
