Zippers for Outdoor Gear, Tents, Tarps and Technical Textiles
How to Select an Outdoor or Technical Textile Zipper
An outdoor zipper is part of a complete closure system used on garments, bags, covers, tents and technical textile products exposed to external conditions. Selection should not be based only on length or the word “waterproof.”
Consider water exposure, dust, flexing, pulling load, temperature changes, use frequency, end construction, slider type and installation method.
Application Selection Guide
| Application | Suggested Construction | Important Check |
|---|---|---|
| Rainwear or softshell main closure | TPU- or PU-coated open-end zipper | Use verified two-way construction only when the lower section must also open. |
| Technical jacket pocket or ventilation opening | Coated closed-end zipper | Measure the actual pattern opening and verify the end type. |
| Outdoor bag or equipment case | Coated or heavy nylon continuous chain | Test curves, corners, fabric layers and slider arrangement. |
| Tent entrance or window | Heavy nylon or molded continuous zipper | Use a double-pull slider when operation from both sides is required. |
| Tarpaulin, awning or protective cover | Heavy molded or #10 continuous coil zipper | Include corner, reinforcement and end allowances in the cut length. |
| Camera, motorcycle or device bag | Coated closed-end or continuous zipper | Test coating performance along repeated folding lines. |
Waterproof, Water-Repellent and Coated Zippers
- Water-repellent zipper: Helps reduce water passing through the zipper line.
- TPU- or PU-coated zipper: Uses a technical film or coating on the visible face of the zipper chain.
- Waterproof closure system: Should describe a complete tested construction that also includes seams, ends, fabric and installation.
Do not make absolute claims about pressure sealing, submersion, chemical resistance, UV life or temperature range without a verified technical data sheet or test report.
See the coated and water-repellent zipper collection for ready-length options.
TPU and PU Coating
TPU and PU coatings can provide a smoother technical face and help reduce surface moisture entry. Flexibility, coating thickness, adhesion and fold resistance vary by product.
The material name alone does not confirm a specific environmental rating. Use only verified test information when technical performance must be declared.
Ready-Length or Continuous Zipper Chain?
Ready-Length Technical Zippers
A ready-length zipper is supplied with a defined functional length, slider and prepared end construction. It can suit jackets, rainwear, pockets, bags and standard-size cases.
Continuous Technical Zipper Chain
Continuous zipper chain is supplied by length and cut for the required application. It provides production flexibility for tents, tarps, covers, long bags and equipment cases.
Continuous chain is not a completed zipper immediately after cutting. Slider installation, stops, end preparation and reinforcement may still be required.
The verified 100 m / 328.08 ft tarpaulin and tent zipper set is an example of a workshop-scale chain-and-slider package.
Tent and Tarpaulin Zipper Selection
Large textile panels may place continuous pulling and wind load on the zipper line. Chain profile, tape width, slider, reinforcement and sewing method must be evaluated together.
Molded plastic and heavy #10 coil chains may be considered for tent entrances, tarp flaps, awning panels and equipment covers. Final suitability must be confirmed through application testing.
Double-Pull Slider vs. Two Sliders
A double-pull slider has a pull tab on both sides of one slider body. It allows a tent or cover to be operated from inside and outside.
A two-slider zipper has two separate slider bodies on the same chain. These are different constructions and must not be described as the same feature.
Continuous Chain Planning Guide
| Set Size | Example Use | Planning Note |
|---|---|---|
| 10 m / 32.81 ft + 10 sliders | Samples, repairs and low-volume production | Calculate waste and zipper use per item. |
| 20 m / 65.62 ft + 10 sliders | Small tent, tarp or case workshop | Two-slider closures will require additional sliders. |
| 50 m / 164.04 ft + 25 sliders | Medium production and repair work | Add curve, corner and reinforcement allowances. |
| 100 m / 328.08 ft + 50 sliders | Regular tent and tarp production | Confirm that one color and chain batch cover the project. |
| 200 m / 656.17 ft + 100 sliders | High-volume workshop production | Approve chain-slider compatibility before bulk cutting. |
Common Selection and Production Errors
- Do not promise full waterproof performance from a coated zipper alone.
- Do not assign temperature, UV or pressure ratings without test documents.
- Do not treat molded and heavy coil zipper chains as interchangeable.
- Do not assume sliders are included with every continuous chain.
- Do not assume identical size labels guarantee slider compatibility.
- Do not confuse a double-pull slider with two separate sliders.
- Do not begin curved or corner production without a sample.
- Do not sew a heavy tent zipper into an unreinforced lightweight panel.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which zipper should be used for outdoor products?
Select according to water exposure, dust, load and use frequency. Coated ready-length zippers may suit technical apparel, while heavier continuous chains may suit tents and tarps.
Is a TPU-coated zipper completely waterproof?
Not by itself. Seams, zipper ends, the slider, fabric and installation method also affect the finished product's protection level.
Which zipper is suitable for tents and tarpaulins?
A heavy molded or #10 continuous coil zipper may be considered. Final selection depends on panel size, corner design and expected load.
Are sliders included with continuous zipper chain?
It depends on the product. Some sets include a stated number of sliders, while chain-only products may require separate sliders.
What is a double-pull zipper slider?
It is one slider body with pull tabs on both sides, allowing operation from inside and outside. It is not the same as a zipper with two slider bodies.
How should continuous zipper length be measured?
Measure the actual closure path and include allowances for corners, sewing, reinforcement and end finishing before cutting.
Do coated zipper seams need additional sealing?
Where higher water protection is required, stitch holes and joining areas may need seam tape, welding or another suitable sealing method.
Can different zipper chains use the same slider?
Not automatically. The slider must match the actual chain material, profile and dimensions.
