Open-End Separating Zippers for Jackets and Outerwear

What Is an Open-End Separating Zipper?

An open-end zipper has an insertion pin and retainer box at the bottom, allowing both zipper tapes to detach completely. This construction is commonly used at the centre front of jackets, coats, vests and long outerwear.

The top stops remain fixed and prevent the slider from leaving the chain. Therefore, a standard open-end zipper should not be described as opening or separating at both ends.

Selection by Garment Type

Application General Zipper Length Important Check
Children's jacket or vest 28–47 cm / 11.02–18.50 in Check the centre-front length, tooth profile and ease of pin insertion.
Short jacket or cropped outerwear 35–53 cm / 13.78–20.87 in Match the zipper tape and chain profile to the fabric construction.
Standard jacket and coat 55–80 cm / 21.65–31.50 in Confirm the finished front length, chain type and slider configuration.
Parka and long coat 70–100 cm / 27.56–39.37 in Assess whether two-way lower opening is required for movement.
Abaya and full-length outerwear 100–160 cm / 39.37–62.99 in Verify standard or reverse coil and single- or two-slider operation.
Rainwear and technical outerwear Coated open-end or two-way zipper Test coating, stitch holes, zipper ends and the complete protection system.

These length ranges are general guidance. Approve the final zipper from the actual pattern and functional centre-front opening.

Closed-End, Open-End and Two-Way Zippers

Construction Bottom Function Slider Configuration Typical Use
Closed-end The tapes remain joined at the bottom stop. Normally one slider Pockets, trousers, skirts, bags and cases
Open-end separating The tapes detach through an insertion pin and box. Normally one slider Jackets, coats, vests and abayas
Two-way separating The tapes detach and the lower section can open. Two separate sliders Long coats, parkas and full-length outerwear

Separating and two-way are not interchangeable terms. Separating identifies full tape detachment; two-way also requires two sliders and lower-opening operation.

Single-Slider and Two-Slider Construction

A standard single-slider open-end zipper opens from the top. When the slider reaches the bottom, the insertion pin can be removed from the retainer box.

A two-way or combi zipper has two separate slider bodies. The lower slider can move upward to create an opening at the bottom while the upper section remains closed.

One slider with pull tabs on both faces is not a two-slider separating zipper.

Nylon Coil Open-End Zippers

Nylon coil separating zippers offer a flexible and comparatively lightweight closure for jackets, vests, coats and long garments.

Verified Turkish Type 5 coil products should use #3 in English product naming, while Turkish Type 10 should use #5.

Molded Plastic Open-End Zippers

Molded plastic zippers use separate plastic teeth attached to textile tape. Their visible tooth profile is used on jackets, coats, vests and design-led outerwear.

Standard, crocodile-tooth and metallic-look products remain molded plastic even when the visible surface resembles metal.

See available styles in the molded plastic zipper category.

Reverse-Coil Open-End Zippers

A reverse-coil zipper turns the spiral toward the reverse face and creates a cleaner visible tape line. Reverse construction describes the chain orientation, not the end type or slider count.

A reverse zipper may therefore be closed-end, open-end, single-slider or two-way depending on the verified product construction.

Coated Open-End Zippers

TPU- or PU-coated open-end zippers may help reduce rain and surface moisture entering through the zipper face in technical outerwear.

A coated zipper alone does not make the finished garment fully waterproof. Stitch holes, slider gaps, the insertion box, zipper ends and fabric construction also affect protection.

See related options in the coated zipper category.

Metallic-Look Open-End Zippers

A metallic-looking zipper may use nylon coil or molded plastic teeth with a nickel, gold, brass, copper or black-metal appearance.

Metallic appearance does not confirm genuine metal teeth. The actual chain material and visible finish must be listed separately.

How Is Open-End Zipper Length Measured?

Measure the functional chain from the top stop to the working end of the retainer-box assembly. Do not include additional tape above or below the functional zipper.

  1. Measure the garment centre-front line from the pattern.
  2. Define the neckline and lower-hem zipper positions.
  3. Check that the box and pin can operate without bending.
  4. Determine whether one or two sliders are required.
  5. Approve the zipper with the actual outer fabric, lining and placket.

Why Does the Insertion Pin Not Enter the Box?

  • The pin is not fully inserted.
  • The two tapes are being held at different heights.
  • The box or pin has rotated during sewing.
  • The slider and chain belong to different zipper systems.
  • The lower components are worn, bent or damaged.
  • Fabric layers are pressing against the bottom assembly.

Common Selection and Product-Data Errors

  • Do not describe an open-end zipper as separating at both ends.
  • Do not describe every separating zipper as two-way.
  • Do not confuse one double-pull slider with two slider bodies.
  • Do not use reverse coil as an end-type value.
  • Do not classify metallic-look nylon or plastic as genuine metal chain.
  • Do not claim full waterproofing from a coated zipper alone.
  • Do not assume slider compatibility from the nominal size only.
  • Do not select a replacement from length alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an open-end zipper?

An open-end zipper uses an insertion pin and retainer box at the bottom so that both zipper tapes can detach completely.

Are open-end and separating zippers the same?

Yes. A separating zipper is an open-end zipper whose tapes can detach completely through the lower pin-and-box system.

Does every separating zipper open from the bottom?

No. Lower opening requires a two-way construction with two separate sliders. A standard separating zipper normally has one slider.

How is a jacket zipper measured?

Measure the functional chain from the top stop to the working end of the retainer box. Do not include additional sewing tape.

Why does the insertion pin not enter the box?

The pin may be incomplete, the tapes may be misaligned, the lower parts may be damaged or the slider and chain may be incompatible.

Is a metallic-look open-end zipper made from metal?

Not always. The chain may be nylon coil or molded plastic, while the metallic appearance describes only the color or surface finish.

Is a coated open-end zipper completely waterproof?

Not by itself. Stitching, slider gaps, the pin-and-box assembly, zipper ends, fabric and installation affect the finished protection level.
