What Is a Jacket Zipper and Where Is It Used?
A jacket zipper is a fastening system used on the front opening, pockets, sleeves, detachable hoods or auxiliary compartments of jackets, coats, parkas, vests and other outerwear. The correct zipper must be selected according to the fabric weight, opening length, frequency of use, required separation and garment design.
The main front closure of a jacket normally uses an open-end or separating zipper. This structure allows the two zipper tape halves to detach completely at the bottom. Jacket pockets, inner compartments, sleeve openings and other sections that must remain joined at the bottom usually use a closed-end or bottom-stop zipper.

How to Measure a Jacket Zipper
Do not measure only the total zipper tape length. The functional zipper length is normally measured from the top stop to the bottom stop, retainer box or lower end mechanism. The extra tape above and below the working zipper section is used for sewing and must not automatically be included in the stated zipper length.
When replacing an existing zipper, close the old zipper and measure the functional section on a flat surface. When producing a new garment, measure the finished opening after allowing for seam and construction margins.

Types of Jacket and Coat Zippers
Nylon Coil Jacket Zippers
Nylon coil zippers use a continuous spiral element and generally provide a flexible, lightweight and smooth-running closure. They may be used for everyday jackets, sportswear, children's outerwear, jacket pockets and various textile applications.
When a nylon coil zipper is used as the main front closure, confirm that it has an open-end / separating bottom system. The zipper size, tape strength and slider must also be suitable for the fabric weight and frequency of use.

Molded Plastic and Chunky Jacket Zippers
Molded plastic zippers are formed from individually molded plastic teeth. Their clearly visible tooth structure makes them suitable for jackets, coats, vests, workwear, sportswear and decorative outerwear.
Products described as #5, #6, #8, #9, chunky, crocodile-tooth or metallic-look molded zippers must not automatically be considered interchangeable. Always check the exact zipper family, tooth width, slider compatibility, tape construction and end configuration on the individual product page.

Metal and Metallic-Look Jacket Zippers
A genuine metal zipper and a metallic-look zipper are not the same product. A genuine metal zipper uses separate metal teeth, while a metallic-look model may use coated nylon coil or molded plastic teeth.
Metallic-look nylon and molded plastic zippers may provide a decorative metal appearance with a lighter construction. Before ordering, check whether the product is described as metal teeth, metallic tooth color, coated molded teeth or metal-look teeth.

Water-Repellent and Coated Jacket Zippers
TPU- or PU-coated zippers may be used for rainwear, outdoor jackets, technical outerwear, bags and equipment where surface water exposure needs to be reduced. The performance level varies according to the coating, zipper construction, slider, end system and installation method.
A coated or water-repellent zipper does not by itself make the completed garment waterproof. Stitch holes, zipper ends, seams and other joining areas may require separate sealing.

Open-End, Closed-End and Two-Way Zipper Differences
Open-End / Separating Zipper
An open-end or separating zipper allows both zipper tape halves to detach completely through the retainer box and insertion pin at the bottom. This is the standard structure used when a jacket, coat or vest must open completely.
Separating does not mean two-way. The word separating describes the ability of the two tape halves to separate completely. It does not state that the zipper can open from both the top and bottom.

Closed-End / Bottom-Stop Zipper
A closed-end zipper remains permanently joined at the bottom and cannot separate into two tape halves. It is commonly used for jacket pockets, inner compartments, sleeve openings, bags and auxiliary sections.
A closed-end pocket zipper must not be selected as the main front zipper when the jacket needs to open completely.

Two-Way / Combi Zipper
A two-way or combi zipper uses two sliders and can be opened from the top or from the lower section. In a two-way separating model, the two zipper tape halves can also detach completely at the bottom.
